My friend told me that if ice would melt, these bears wouldn't survive - hard to believe people can let it happen... I hope no.

You're absolutely right - The Humane Society & Defenders of Wildlife (& other organizations as well) have been sending so many notices & requests for us to send letters to Senators, etc. (I'm probably on a "list" somewhere as an activist with all the letters I write!); it's truly heartbreaking to see the ensuing battle...they believe they may be extinct in the next 50yrs if we can't stop the progression, and with the Bush/Cheney administration approving the sale of land in Alaska to Big Oil, it's allowing the situation to escalate instead of protecting our environment. I can't look at these sweet faces without getting a bit 'misty' knowing what's happening to them :(
