Life's Funny....and so is Love :)

Here's a little update to all my beautiful friends...

Sorry I haven't been on for awhile: Still working alot, but not quite as many hours (no more 2-3 consecutive days with no sleep 'cause working straight thru the night!) but more importantly...  my "childhood sweetheart" & I got back together.  When I say childhood, it's 'cause we met when I was 13 & dated on & off during our teen years & yep - he was my 1st boyfriend from roller skating! - Sounds so funny to say that! hehe!! Well, we got back together...about 20 years had gone by since we last spoke, but those sparks re-ignited our first visit & everything just fell into place from there.  Funny how life works: now we're Engaged!!!

So, while I'm trying to keep up with the workload, I'm also spending time with him & we're making plan for the future, working on the house so I can get all my things moved from my home to his -myself included, of course!! lol & in the early stages of making our wedding plans, thus the reason I haven't been online lately!  I just signed-in to drop this note, but  I hope to get some time to get in touch with everyone & catch up very soon.  I miss you all so much - you really are another family to me & I love you all a bunch!

I hope everyone is having a great start to the summer - I'll want to know all the 'juicy' details of what you've been up to, of course! :)  For now, just know I'm thinking of you all & hope you're having the times of your lives!!!  Keep rockin' & please don't forget about me... I really will be back to chat with everyone soon!!!

Echelon love & hugs, and as always... PROVEHITO IN ALTUM!!!!

Take Action Now!! Protect the Arctic Refuge!!!!

They need 40,000 letters sent to the Senate - we're already over 1/2 way there, and in the past 5 hours I've seen the numbers jump by by more than 4,000!!!   PLEASE use the link & send a letter asking our Senators to take action & save our Arctic Refuge from Big Oil today....it only takes a moment of your time to help with something that can have a permanent impact on our futures.....

Wildlife Alert

Protect the Arctic Refuge -- Permanently!
Polar Bear Surfacing, Minerals Management Service

Help win permanent protections for one of the most onshore denning habitats for our last remaining polar bears.

Tell your Senators reject to drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and support permanent protections for this special place.

Act Now!

Increase your impact -- forward this message on to others who care about our wildlife and wild places.
Dear Monica,

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge has been called America’s Serengeti -- a special place that’s home to caribou, snow fox and millions of migratory birds. It is also one of the most important onshore denning habitats for America’s struggling polar bears.

Now this special place is under renewed attack by Congress and the Bush/Cheney Administration.

Take action now -- tell your Senators to reject drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and support permanent protections for this special place.

As polar bears struggle to survive, the Bush/Cheney Administration has delayed meaningful action to protect these special creatures while selling drilling rights in vital habitat off Alaska’s coast to Big Oil.

Worse, polar bears and other Arctic wildlife are now facing a double-barreled threat from Congress and the Bush/Cheney Administration.

President Bush has included Arctic National Wildlife Refuge drilling in his budget. And Sens. Ted Stevens and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska have introduced legislation to link drilling plans to gas prices -- despite federal estimates that such drilling would do next to nothing to reduce gas prices.

But these drilling plans would spell disaster for our already struggling polar bears and other wildlife that depend on the Refuge for survival, while increasing our dependence on dirty fossil fuels that contribute to global warming.

However, thanks to a bipartisan effort, the Arctic Refuge could be protected permanently. Legislation sponsored by Senator Joseph Lieberman would set aside the coastal plain of the Refuge -- the biological heart of the Refuge -- designating it as a wilderness area and shielding this special place from Big Oil’s grasp.

Tell your Senators to support legislation to permanently protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (S. 2316) and to reject attempts to allow Big Oil’s drills in this national treasure.

This legislation is all the more important as our polar bears struggle to survive. Without these permanent protections, Big Oil could one day be allowed to industrialize one of the few remaining homes for America’s great white bears.

Please write your Senators now and tell them it’s time to reject Arctic National Wildlife Refuge drilling and protect this national treasure from Big Oil -- forever.

Thank you for all you do to protect wildlife and wild places.

Sign the Petition to Save the Seals & spread the word!! Photo downloads also available - see message for details :)

I'll never forget the first time I saw the shocking images: conscious seal pups being clubbed over the head and dragged across the ice ... with some baby seals even skinned alive. I vowed right then to do everything I could to help stop this senseless cruelty.
- Nigel Barker

Two weeks ago Humane Society International's ProtectSeals team escorted British actor Alison Steadman and "America's Next Top Model" judge and fashion photographer Nigel Barker to the Canadian ice floes. They came to experience the beauty of the harp seal nursery and to shine a spotlight on the enormous potential for eco-tourism in the region, as well as the impending slaughter of these young pups.

Today, I invite you to join Alison, Nigel and everyone on our ProtectSeals team in our efforts to spread the word about this cruelty. Many people still do not realize that Canadian fishermen brutally kill hundreds of thousands of baby seals every year, just for their fur. They are set to slaughter 275,000 this year alone.

One important way that you can help is by signing our petition calling on European legislators to ban the seal product trade.

Right now, the European Commission is considering proposing a ban on seal product trade in the European Union -- a move many believe could spell the end of commercial seal hunting globally. We need people all over the world to sign our petition urging the EU to ban its trade in all seal products now.

After you've signed, please take ProtectSeals Petition Challenge and ask all of your friends and family to sign, too.

The five people who recruit the most new pledge signers will win a new seals T-shirt designed by Nigel. Everyone who invites their friends to sign the petition can download some of Nigel's beautiful seal photos for their computer wallpaper. The more people you get to sign the petition between now and midnight April 1, the greater the chance you'll have to win!

Your involvement during these next few weeks is critical -- because our campaign is starting to achieve real results:

  • Global markets for seal products are closing.
  • Prices paid to sealers are falling.
  • Governments are condemning commercial seal hunting.
  • The ProtectSeals boycott of Canadian seafood is gaining momentum.
  • Canadians are speaking out against the seal hunt.

It only takes a few minutes to speak up for baby seals. If we all act now, this spring's Canadian hunt may be the last commercial seal hunt any of us ever has to witness.

Sincerely,

Andrew Rowan

Action of the Month

Run-Down Refuges

Highly endangered red wolves in North Carolina’s Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, endangered manatees in Florida’s Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge and hundreds of other species across the country make their home in U.S. Wildlife Refuges.

Yet, refuges across the country have downsized wildlife biologists, refuge managers and other staff, slipped into disrepair...and even closed their gates to the public for lack of funds.

Help preserve wildlife refuges in your state and around America. Urge your U.S. Representative and Senators to support adequate funding for the National Wildlife Refuge System.

Where the Jaguars Roam

More than forty years ago, jaguars were nearly wiped out from the U.S. These spotted cats once ranged as far north as the Grand Canyon, but few are seen north of the U.S./Mexico border today.

Defenders and our conservation partners in Arizona and Mexico are working to bring back this spotted cat. From the recently established 45,000-acre Northern Jaguar Reserve in Sonora, Mexico to an innovative camera-trap contest for local ranchers, we're giving these fabulous felines a fighting chance to survive.

But with federal officials refusing to develop a jaguar recovery plan and disruptive border wall projects on the fast-track, many obstacles remain to bringing jaguars back to their historic U.S. stomping grounds.

CRUCIAL TIME FOR HATTERAS SHOREBIRDS

Defenders and our conservation partners have asked a federal judge to restrict beach driving on portions of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The court action aims to save the 2008 breeding season, when shorebirds begin to nest on the areas sandy beaches. Colonial shorebird nests on the Seashore have declined by 86 percent over the last 10 years.

RED KNOT ANYMORE?
Red knots depend on horseshoe crab eggs deposited on the beaches of the Delaware Bay for sustenance on the final leg of their migration from as far south as the tip of South America to the Arctic. Unfortunately their numbers are plummeting, due mainly to the overharvest of the horseshoe crab. That's why Defenders and our conservation partners filed an emergency petition with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to list the red knot under the Endangered Species Act -- before these incredible birds are gone forever.

A Passion for Wildlife on Capitol Hill

Maryland's Wayne Gilchrest didn't play the politicians game. Over his 17-year career in the House of Representatives, this Republican showed a passion for wildlife and conservation -- reaching beyond party politics to do what's right for wildlife and the places it lives.

After a hard-fought re-election campaign, Rep. Gilchrest was defeated last month in a tough contest. His stances on environmental issues reflect the Teddy Roosevelt ethic of stewardship for our natural resources. As he steps down at the end his term, he'll end a distinguished career in Congress -- and the conservation community will lose a true ally on Capitol Hill.

Don't let Congress cut
funding for species conservation

March 11, 2008

Dear Monica,

Grants from the Multinational Species Conservation Fund (MSCF) help support such vital measures as anti-poaching patrols, habitat conservation, animal population surveys and disease protection for tigers, rhinos, elephants, great apes, sea turtles and migratory birds worldwide.

Congress is currently considering the MSCF as part of its budgeting process for Fiscal Year 09 and your help is essential to make sure that funding for wildlife conservation is increased rather than slashed. All of these species need protection, and many require urgent action as their numbers dwindle.

Take Action
Please take a moment now to phone your federal legislators to ask them to sign a letter currently being circulated in the House and Senate in support of the Multinational Species Conservation Fund. Click here to look up your legislators and their phone numbers.

You will speak to a staff member who can pass your message along. Remember to leave your name and address so it is clear that you are a constituent.

When calling your Senators, you can say:

"Hello, my name is [your name], and I'm calling from [your town] to ask [your Senator's name] to sign a letter to Interior Appropriations in support of the Multinational Species Conservation Fund currently being circulated by Senators Lieberman and Snowe. I care about wildlife and it's important to me that we do everything we can to protect it. Thank you."

When calling your Representative, you can say:

"Hello, my name is [your name], and I'm calling from [your town] to ask [your Representative's name] to sign a letter to Interior Appropriations in support of the Multinational Species Conservation Fund currently being circulated by Representatives Miller, Young, Bordallo, and Brown. I care about wildlife and it's important to me that we do everything we can to protect it. Thank you."
After you make your calls, send a follow-up e-mail to reiterate your wish to ensure wildlife protection is well-funded. Then, please tell your friends and family how they can help, too.

Please act now! The deadlines for the letters are March 14 (House) and March 28 (Senate).

Thank you for all that you do to help animals.

Sincerely,

56 Wolves Already Dead in Alaska ~ Aerial gunning program reinstated

Message received March 13th from the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund - and while there have been ongoing messages of updates, I've also included an earlier message advising of  actions against American Wolves below...

There's Still
Time to Help

Panting Wolf (Photo: Corel)

Thanks to supporters like you, our ads are on the air and we’re fighting to save wolves and protect the rights of Alaskans to vote on aerial gunning and other wildlife issues.

Donate Now!

Please donate now to help us keep our TV ad on the air, run radio ads and fight this stealth campaign to keep aerial gunning off the ballot and the gunners in the air.

Dear Monica,

As I wrote Wednesday, Governor Sarah Palin and the her political cronies in the Alaska legislature are pushing hard to sneak through legislation to prevent Alaskan voters from putting a stop to the state’s brutal aerial hunting program.

These politicians know that -- when given a choice -- Alaskans reject the state’s baseless use of airplanes to run down and kill wolves.

Help protect the right of Alaskans to vote to stop the wolf slaughter -- Please donate now!

At least fifty-six wolves have already been killed during this year’s aerial gunning season. And as the days grow longer, the state’s brutal and unnecessary aerial gunning program will claim the lives of far more wolves.

More than 56,000 Alaskans petitioned to put the issue of aerial gunning of wolves and bears on the ballot this August. Now Sarah Palin, the legislature and lobbyists at the Alaska Outdoor Council have launched a stealth campaign to remove the initiative from the ballot to ensure that aerial gunning continues.

That’s where we come in…

Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund is working hard to ensure that Alaskans -- not the lobbyists at the Alaska Outdoor Council and the politicians who take their money -- determine the fate of the state’s wolves. Thanks to the more than 1,100 caring wildlife supporters like you, our TV ad is on the air and Alaskans are being alerted to this sneak attack on their rights.

There’s still time for you to help. Please donate now and help keep our TV ad on the air longer, place radio ads and keep the spotlight on this stealth campaign to strip Alaskans of the right to have a say in how their wildlife is managed.

This is a tough fight, and it’s far from over. To stop aerial gunning and protect Alaskans’ right to vote on this controversial issue, we’re not just taking on the Governor -- we’re taking on one of the state’s most powerful lobbying groups and the legislators they have in their corner.

We’re going to need your help to win this one. I hope I can count on your support.

Respectfully,

Rodger Schlickeisen, President

P.S. Things are happening very quickly in Alaska. Please make a secure donation online now or call 1-800-425-4632 to contribute by phone and help ensure that we have the resources we need to win this fight and save wolves.

This was the message received February 20th advising of the actions occurring which would take these beautiful creatures on a very short journey to the endangered species list....

Save America's Wolves

Wolves At Risk

Wolf Pup, black phase (Photo: Corel)

The Bush/Cheney Administration may be just hours away from eliminating vital protections for endangered wolves!

Please call the Department of Interior before 8 PM Eastern Time or first thing tomorrow morning at 1-800-344-WILD (9453) and let agency officials know that you want these wolves to remain protected.

Speak out and be counted! Fill out this survey to report your call.

Dear Monica,

As soon as tomorrow, Interior Secretary Kempthorne is expected to announce the elimination of federal protections for hundreds of endangered wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies.

Please take a moment right now to call the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at 1-800-344-WILD (9453) and deliver this simple message:

“My name is *   and I’m calling from  * Wisconsin. I understand that the federal government may remove wolves in the Greater Yellowstone and Central Idaho regions tomorrow from the list of federally protected threatened and endangered species.

I want your department to know that I strongly oppose the weakening of protections for these wolves and expect you to fulfill your obligation to secure a lasting future in the Northern Rockies for these amazing animals.”

The lives of hundreds of wolves are at stake. Please call tonight before 8 PM Eastern Time or first thing tomorrow morning.

In a matter of hours, newspapers across the country could be reporting on the Bush/Cheney Administration's expected announcement … and its potentially devastating impact on some of America’s most beloved wolves.

But today I need your help to let these federal officials know that Americans love our wolves and want to see them protected.

Please call the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at 1-800-344-WILD (9453) and speak out for our wolves. Leave a message if you can, and remember to let us know that you called.

Respectfully,

Dear Monica,

While polar bear mothers and cubs were nestled in their dens, the Bush/Cheney Administration auctioned off key habitat for these struggling animals to Big Oil --despite the opposition of tens of thousands of activists like you.

Polar bears need all the help they can get. Please donate to support our Campaign to Save Polar Bears.

As a warming climate takes its toll on polar bear habitat, federal officials are selling off the very places these great white bears depend on for hunting, denning and survival.

America’s polar bears will likely be extinct in fewer than 50 years, according to U.S. Geological Survey scientists. Yet federal officials have once again delayed action to protect these struggling animals as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act.

Instead, officials auctioned off millions of acres of vital habitat in Alaska’s Chukchi Sea to Shell and other Big Oil companies earlier this month -- and yet again, President Bush has included dangerous drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in his budget.

Help support our efforts to stop Big Oil from drilling in key polar bear habitat -- please donate to support our Campaign to Save Polar Bears.

Increased drilling in these critical habitats could devastate America’s polar bears. But ExxonMobil, Shell and other Big Oil companies continue to use their billions in profits to press for harmful drilling in the places polar bears need to survive -- and continue our dependence on the fuels that spur rising temperatures that are causing the bears’ demise.

Here's a hint of what our polar bears are up against: Royal Dutch Shell bid more than $105 billion for a single tract of drilling acreage in the Chukchi Sea. [1]

Our polar bears need allies if they are going to survive. Please donate now to help us fight to give our polar bears a fighting chance -- and a lasting future.

Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund is doing all we can to protect our polar bears -- right now, we're...

    • ...working to prevent Arctic Refuge drilling language from entering the federal budget.
    • ...working to pass the Udall-Eisenhower Arctic Wilderness Act, a bill to permanently protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and continuing to battle efforts to open this special place to Big Oil’s dirty rigs.
    • ...working to pass the Global Warming Wildlife Survival Act -- already passed by the House of Representatives, this legislation is a vital first step to ensure that polar bears and other wildlife can cope with a changing climate.
    • ...working to pass the Polar Bear Protection Act, legislation to stop wealthy U.S. trophy hunters from killing polar bears in Canada and returning with their quarry.
    • ...working with Congressional staff to find sensible energy solutions to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, help combat global warming and protect our wildlife.
    • ...holding our elected officials accountable for their actions on global warming and other wildlife-related issues.

Even in their final months in office, officials in the Bush/Cheney Administration have made their intentions crystal clear: they’ll fight for Big Oil’s profit -- and leave our polar bears out in the cold.

Please donate today to support our Campaign to Save Polar Bears -- and help  these Arctic hunters survive.

Comcast Web Blocking - Latest FCC Hearing Blocked to the Public!!

I Just received this e-mail today regarding the latest update on the FCC hearing investigation Comcast's recent Internet blocking...

Video link below: Comcast caught filling the seats at the hearing to keep the public out!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYGtNmmb2y0

SavetheInternet.com banner

Dear Monica,

Video: Comcast tries to buy our silence

SavetheInternet.com just caught Comcast Corp. stacking an FCC hearing with paid (and apparently sleepy) seat-fillers.

The hearing was set up to investigate Comcast's recent blocking of the Internet. But Comcast packed the room so that the public couldn't get in to voice their support for Net Neutrality.

We took pictures and recorded an interview that proves Comcast was taking seats from concerned citizens. Now, we need you to make sure that the company doesn't get away with this ever again. Here's what you can do:

  1. Tell the FCC to stop Comcast Web blocking.
  2. Tell your friends to take action at SavetheInternet.com.
  3. Support SavetheInternet.com's campaign to protect free choice on the Internet.

Comcast is blocking the public debate just like it is blocking the Internet: it wields its substantial political and financial power to shut out debate and shut up people.

The picture above (which you can redistribute as you wish) tells a part of the story. Comcast paid people to fill space who were so uninterested in the issue that they took the opportunity to nap. Meanwhile, more than a hundred people with legitimate concerns were left out in the Boston cold. (read more about it on our blog and the links below)

Tens of thousands of people have already protested Comcast by writing the FCC a or urging their elected officials to support the "Internet Freedom Preservation Act," a bipartisan bill that would re-establish Net Neutrality protections as a foundation of communications policy.

For too long, media policymaking has been rigged against us. By taking action, we're sending a wakeup call to phone and cable lobbyists that they will no longer set the agenda.

Whether it's on the Internet or at public hearings, we will stand up for everyone's right to connect and be heard.

Thank you,

Timothy Karr
Campaign Director

Thanks to our extended family and friends out there, each of the eight beautiful countries we visited felt like home. Your passion, the energy, and belief continue to inspire us across continents and oceans and we thank you so much for that.

We also want to thank everyone who made this tour so successful. We not only benefit from the greatest family of friends and fans in the world, but a stellar crew and an amazing collection of musicians. And if you aren't familiar with some of the bands who we were honored to have opening our shows, please pay them a visit online or at a show near you. Thanks so much to:

IN CASE OF FIRE
LOST ALONE
CHEAP HOTEL
NEIL'S CHILDREN
PLASTIC PASSION
FULL DUPLEX
SOMA
MAKE BELIEVE
QWENTIN

And many many many thanks to our favorite ballerinas from the ROYAL BALLET, an amazing gospel choir and our ever-impressive friends from STOMP who helped us make that first Hammersmith show one we will never forget.

This was truly one of the most amazing experiences we've ever had on the road. Not even canceled ferries, delayed trains or the occasional broken foot could put a damper on the last month.

We can't wait to come back, we are so very grateful for the adventure, and we hope to see you soon!

Also, check out an amazing article by KERRANG's Ian Winwood. It's our first ever band cover for KERRANG! and we couldn't be prouder of the story:

For all the moms & future mommys!

I'm invisible.

It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response,
the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the
phone and ask to be taken to the store. Inside I'm thinking, 'Can't
you see I'm on the phone?' Obviously not. No one can see if I'm on
the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my
head in the corner, because no one can see me at all.

I'm invisible.

Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more: Can you fix this?
Can you tie this? Can you open this? Some days I'm not a pair of
hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm a clock to ask, 'What time is
it?' I'm a satellite guide to answer, 'What number is the Disney
Channel?' I'm a car to order, 'Right around 5:30, please.'

I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and the
eyes that studied history and the mind that graduated summa cum
laude - but now they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to
be seen again.

She's going .. she's going .... she's gone!

One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating the return
of a friend from England . Janice had just gotten back from a
fabulous trip, and she was going on and on about the hotel she stayed
in. I was sitting there, looking around at the others all put
together so well. It was hard not to compare and feel sorry for
myself as I looked down at my out-of-style dress; it was the only
thing I could find that was clean...
My unwashed hair was pulled up in a banana clip and I was afraid I
could actually smell peanut butter in it. I was feeling pretty
pathetic, when Janice turned to me with a beautifully wrapped
package, and said, ' I brought you this.' It was a book on the great
cathedrals of Europe . I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me
until I read her inscription: 'With admiration for the greatness of
what you are building when no one sees.'

In the days ahead I would read - no, devour - the book. And I would
discover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, after
which I could pattern my work:
* No one can say who built the great cathedrals - we have no record
of their names.
* These builders gave their whole lives for a work they would never
see finished.
* They made great sacrifices and expected no credit..
* The passion of their building was fueled by their faith that the
eyes of God saw everything.

A legendary story in the book told of a rich man who came to visit
the cathedral while it was being built, and he saw a workman carving
a tiny bird on the inside of a beam. He was puzzled and asked the
man, 'Why are you spending s o much time carving that bird into a
beam that will be covered by the roof? No one will ever see it.'
And the workman replied, 'Because God sees.'

I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place. It was
almost as if I heard God whispering to me, 'I see you. I see the
sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does. No
act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no cupcake
you've baked, is too small for me to notice and smile over. You are
building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what it will
become.'

At times, my invisibility feels like an affliction. But it is not a
disease that is erasing my life. It is the cure for the disease of my
own self-centeredness. It is the antidote to my strong, stubborn
pride.

When I really think about it, I don't want my son to tell the friend
he's bringing home from college for Thanksgiving, 'My mom gets up at
4 in the morning and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes a
turkey for three hours and presses all the linens for the table.'
That would mean I'd built a shrine or a monument to myself. I just
want him to want to come home. And then, if there is anything more to
say to his friend, to add, 'You're gonna love it there.'

As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot see if we're
doing it right. And one day, it is very possible that the world will
marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that has
been added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible women.

Paul McCartney's special message to save seals

Dear Friend -- With your help, we've made tremendous strides toward ending the cruel Canadian seal hunt. Each spring our fearless ProtectSeals team travels to the ice to document the cruelty for the world to see. The world is outraged and our seafood boycott has resulted in millions of dollars of lost revenue for sealers. This year, we'll continue our fight on several fronts. Today, I wanted to share this message from Paul McCartney with you, and ask for your help in persuading the European Union to save millions of seals from a brutal death.

Stop the Cruel Seal Trade

Dear Friend,

Like me, you’ve probably seen the horrifying images of helpless baby seals being beaten and shot for their fur. Wounded seals left to suffer in agony. Conscious pups sliced open. And the reason for their pain? So that someone can sell their fur.

For so many years, we’ve tried to stop this senseless brutality. Today, you and I have a chance to stop this cruelty forever.

Twenty-five years ago, the European Union made history when it ended its trade in products from newborn harp seals. Commercial seal hunting in some countries came to a virtual standstill, and countless baby seals were saved. But the hunters began to kill the pups when they were slightly older -- and the products from those seals are legally traded in the EU. Today, some commercial seal hunts are twice as large as they were when the EU first took action.
But there is new hope for the seals. The EU is considering ending all seal product trade in the European Union, regardless of the age of the seals. This move would save millions of seals from brutal slaughter, and help put a final end to commercial seal hunting globally.

Right now, the EU is asking people around the world to submit their opinions on the historic proposal. Please take a few minutes today to tell the European Union you fully support a ban on seal product trade.

I’m lucky: I was able to visit a harp seal nursery in Canada’s Gulf of St. Lawrence before the hunters descended. The sight of mothers and their pups on the pristine ice is one I won’t forget, and I’ve committed myself to working to preserve that wondrous spectacle for generations to come.

Commercial seal hunting doesn’t simply cause unimaginable suffering to the seals; it is also dehumanizing and often dangerous work, contributing very little to the incomes of the hunters. A European Union ban on all seal product trade would force nations where seal huting has taken place to invest in real alternatives -- jobs that will provide safe and sustainable futures.

Lets work together to make a better life for seals and people. Say no to the cruel trade in seal products in the European Union. It doesn’t matter where you live -- your voice counts. Please take action to save the seals today.

The deadline for the European Union to hear your views is February 13.

Sincerely,
Paul McCartney

Help Make Sure the FBI Tracks Animal Cruelty!

A Message from HSUS:

Help Make Sure the FBI Tracks Animal Cruelty!

Dear Friend,

The Tracking Animal Cruelty Crimes Act (S. 2439), recently introduced by Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), directs the U.S. Attorney General to modify the FBI's crime data reporting systems to list cruelty to animals as a separate offense category.

Research clearly demonstrates that there is a close association between animal abuse and family violence, as well as other crimes. In addition, animal abuse frequently is one of the first signals of a child, and family, at risk. Without accurate tracking, there is no way to access important information such as trends or the relationship to demographic and geographic data, on which to base policy development and resource allocation.

TAKE ACTION
Please make brief, polite phone calls right away to your two U.S. Senators and urge them to support adding animal cruelty as a separate category in the FBI's crime reporting database. Click here to look up your Senators and their office phone numbers.

Making a call is easy. A staff member will take your message and pass it to your legislator. You can say:

"Hello, this is [your name]. I am a constituent from [your town]. I'm calling to ask the senator to support the Tracking Animal Cruelty Crimes Act (S. 2439), and ask that the senator push for this bill to get a vote. This issue is important to me. Thank you for your consideration."

Then, send a follow-up email to reiterate your support for having animal cruelty added as a separate category in the FBI's crime database.

Finally, please be sure to tell your friends and family about this important measure and how they can help, too.

Thank you for all you do for animals!

Sincerely,

Mike Markarian
President
Humane Society Legislative Fund

Reduce the suffering of animals raised for meat, milk and
eggs

January 30, 2008

Tell USDA: Stop Allowing the Torture of Downed Cows to Feed Our Schoolchildren

Dear Friend,

see the
investigation videoDragging cows too weak to stand. Shocking them with electric prods when they can't walk. Ramming them with forklifts. Even forcing water down their throats -- right out of the manual on waterboarding.

Our shocking undercover investigation revealed these and other abuses of "downed" dairy cows -- those who are too sick or injured to walk -- at a Southern California slaughter plant. And The Humane Society of the United States’ investigation also discovered that the meat from these tortured animals gets fed to children through the National School Lunch Program! Please watch our investigative video, and then take action today to stop this cruelty.

Our video of the cruelty is very difficult to watch. Even worse is the thought that an outfit like Hallmark Meat Packing Company got away with this kind of abuse every day, without proper oversight from the USDA.

Urge the USDA to tighten its lax enforcement of the downer rule and to close the rule's loophole -- so that cows who are obviously in no shape to walk are not taken to slaughter in the first place.

Don't forget to tell your friends and family how they can help, too.

Thank you for all you do for animals.

Sincerely,

Wayne Pacelle
President and CEO
The Humane Society of the United States

P.S. You can find the full details of this shocking investigation on our website or in a recent Washington Post story.
